Dauphin Island

Immerse yourself in the coastal charm and rich maritime traditions of Dauphin Island and its surrounding communities. From exploring vibrant ecosystems to savoring the freshest seafood, this itinerary offers a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage along Alabama’s picturesque Gulf Coast.

DAYS 1-4

This peaceful barrier island is famous for its scenery and calm, relaxing beaches. Bicycle paths and walking trails throughout the island allow visitors to dive deep into their surroundings. A visit to the Alabama Aquarium at Dauphin Island Sea Lab is highly recommended to learn about the ecosystems of this important estuarine area, which is the fourth largest in the United States. Bird enthusiasts will be fascinated by Dauphin Island’s role as a stopover for migrating birds. In springtime, the island becomes a sanctuary for bird species heading north, making the Audubon Bird Sanctuary on the eastern side a prime location to observe both local and visiting avian life. If you’re looking for solitude head to the end of the island with its seven miles of protected coastline and sandy dunes–perfect for a peaceful stroll or moments of contemplation surrounded by nature’s beauty.

Dauphin Island’s Historic Fort Gaines played a pivotal role during the Civil War. The now-retired, but well-preserved fortification offers a unique vantage point of both Mobile Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. Its strategic position allowed it to play a crucial role in coastal defense, and today, visitors can explore its historic walls and learn about its storied past.

Bellingrath Garden grounds

While it doesn’t fit the mold of a traditional ecotourism spot, Bellingrath Gardens & Home is worth a visit to take in the breathtaking indigenous flora, various bird species, and pollinators, all contributing to the local ecological balance.

Consider visiting Lightning Point in Bayou La Batre to witness The Nature Conservancy’s efforts in restoring shorelands and enjoy a tranquil kayak or canoe ride through the wildlife marshlands. Bayou La Batre is recognized as Alabama’s “Seafood Capital” and is home to family-owned restaurants where you can indulge in freshly caught seafood.
