Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail
Consists of 26 trails among nine distinct ecosystems that make up more than 28 miles of paved trail within the 6,180 acres of land inside Gulf State Park. Historically, many parts of the trail were utilized by the area’s indigenous peoples, explorers, and settlers of the region. The trail has been outfitted with interpretive signs identifying the plants and wildlife you may see along the way. One of the trail’s highlights is located at the hub of the system, where four paths meet. Here you’ll find the Butterfly Garden (Lat/Lng: 30.27491, -87.60667), where butterfly-attracting plants bloom from spring to fall. Visitors can enjoy biking, jogging, walking, wildlife watching, plant and tree identification, photography, and connecting with nature.
About
The Backcountry Trail is steeped in lore and local legend. For decades, a creature believed to be part man/part wildcat–the “Catman”–allegedly lurked along the paths and swamps of the backcountry woodlands.
